Update: The district has satisfactorily addressed this issue, read the update here.

We are not okay with Spartanburg School District 7 implementing LGBTQ+ curriculum in our schools and its recent attempt to append that curriculum with Black History Month. These topics are best addressed by parents in the home, and are not appropriate for or comfortable for teachers to address in the classroom.

We are not biased against anyone who is gender non-conforming, nor do we condone bullying of these people. In fact, we explicitly denounce anyone who incites hatred against anyone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community. We simply do not believe the school system is an appropriate place to teach our children about LGBTQ+ topics.

We are asking that:

  1. LGBTQ+ education does not replace or append Black History Month.
  2. LGBTQ+ education material does not get distributed by District 7 personnel, especially to teachers.
  3. LGBTQ+ education does not get introduced in health curriculum.
  4. School District 7 administration acknowledge the mistake in distributing this material to teachers, and apologize for the error.
  5. School District 7 to formally make it a policy not to implement LGBTQ+ education into any curriculum.
  6. If needed, return any funds or grant money that was earmarked for this purpose.
  7. That these actions be taken immediately with official communication from Spartanburg School District 7.

The petition will be forwarded to the superintendent and school board.
